Swaps under a delta E of about 2.3 are hard to spot. Dye lots and coverage still vary, so check the substitute against your fabric in daylight before stitching a large area.

Substitution FAQ

Can I always substitute one DMC color for another?

For a close pair, usually yes. If the color sits next to very similar shades in the design, check that the substitute still reads differently from its neighbors, otherwise two areas can blend together. For large solid areas, buy enough of the substitute to finish, since even the same code can shift slightly between dye lots.

What does the delta E number mean for a swap?

Delta E (CIEDE2000) measures how different two colors look to the eye. Under about 2.3 the difference is barely noticeable and the swap is safe in most designs. Between 2.3 and 5 the swap works for accents but may show in large areas. Above 5 you will see the difference.

Why are there no variegated or metallic substitutes?

This chart covers the solid six-strand DMC palette. Variegated, metallic, and satin threads change color along the strand or catch light differently, so a solid stand-in never looks the same and a numeric distance would be misleading.

Can Crossie swap a color across a whole chart?

Yes. In the Crossie app you can replace any color in a pattern with a different DMC pick and the whole chart updates instantly, including the floss list and skein estimates.
